Torn: A fictional love story by Shubricca L Bell. (Part 7)

Brenda had fallen asleep for a couple of hours, when she was awakened by a screeching sound. The T.V. was still on from earlier. Maybe it was the T.V, or Marcus. She looked at her cell phone, and it was two in the morning. She got out of her bed, “Babe? Is that you?” she said, as she began to walk towards the living room, turning on the hallway light. She turned on the living room light and checked the back door. Then, she went to the kitchen and turned on that light, and checked the front door. Everything looked normal. She turned the lights back off, and walked back to her room. Once she got back in her room, she stood at the dresser and checked a couple of text messages from Tonya. “I’ll text her crazy behind, back in the morning,” she said, with a yawn. She checked a voicemail from Marcus. “Baby, I’m really not good with you being by yourself tonight, but I know you’re upset, so I’m giving you some space, but only for tonight though. If you want, I can send my crew by, to do a security install, tonight. If not, I’ll do it myself in the morning. It will at least give me peace of mind when I’m away, knowing you and the kids are safe. Oh, and I’m still working on the phone situation… I’ll let you know when I find out more. Talk to you later. I love you, bye.” After Brenda listened to Marcus’s message, she put her phone back on the dresser, and was about to get in bed, until she looked up, and saw someone else’s reflection in her dresser mirror. She couldn’t see a face, but the person had a black hoodie and a baseball cap on. Before she could turn around, the person grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head down on her dresser, making her head bleed. Brenda reached her hands behind her, trying to grab, scratch and dig her nails into the person’s skin. She kicked the person in the shin, and the person loss their balance, and let her hair go. As they stumbled backwards, Brenda turned around and kicked, aiming for the scrotum. There were no testicles… which meant, it was a woman. The woman fell down, and Brenda ran to the kitchen, turning on the hallway light as she ran. The woman got up and was fast on Brenda’s tracks. Brenda grabbed a chef’s knife out of the knife block, and turned towards the woman. She still couldn’t make out who she was, because the woman also had on a black ski mask. “I don’t know who you are, but if you come any closer, I’m going to carve you like a Thanksgiving Turkey, trick,” Brenda said, gasping for air. The woman reached in the pocket of her hoodie, with one hand, and pulled out a gun, then pointed it towards Brenda. She used the other hand, to pull off her hoodie, cap and ski mask, throwing the cap and mask, on the floor. “Jackie?” Brenda said with a confused look. She was in total disbelief. “What the hell?” Jackie’s Eric’s fiancé. “Why do you look so surprised, Brenda?” Jackie said, with a smirk. “You know,” she made a short pause, walking towards Brenda. Brenda began to walk backwards, being sure to keep her eyes on Jackie. “I’m tired of you coming between me, and Eric. You think that I don’t know what’s going on between the two of you?” Jackie said, waving the gun around while continuing to walk towards Brenda. As Brenda continued to back up, she tripped on the foot of a chair, but she didn’t fall. “I’ve always known that Eric loves you. Which is why I tried to have you and your fiancé Marcus, put away. You have a good man. I gotta give it to you, because as soon as the cops threatened to arrest you for aiding and abetting, your man took the fall,” Jackie said. This was all news to Brenda’s ears. “Look, Jackie. I don’t know what you think me and Eric has going on, but there’s nothing between us, except our kids. I don’t know what you think you have on me, but I haven’t done anything, so there’s nothing you can pin on me,” Brenda said. “Oh, please. Eric doesn’t tell me much, but I hear everything. I heard him talking to one of his homeboys, about how y’all use that little home security business as a front to rob folks,” Jackie said. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Jackie. Please, just put the gun down, and we can talk about this,” Brenda said. “It’s too late to talk, Brenda. I was going to leave you alone, and forget about this whole nightmare, until Eric broke things off with me, yesterday morning. That’s when I knew, I had to kill you. Then, me, Eric and the kids, can live happily ever after,” Jackie said. “So, that was you, who sent me that message, yesterday? You’re delusional, Jackie. If Eric broke things off with you, it wasn’t because of me. Eric doesn’t love me. He just don’t want another man to raise our kids. Marcus threatens his ego, that’s all. Can’t you see?” Brenda said. “Yeah, whatever. He told me that he was in love with someone else. Stop lying,” Jackie yelled, as she ran up on Brenda with the gun. Brenda dropped the knife, and used both hands to try to take the gun. Jackie fired a shot in the ceiling as they struggled. Brenda finally knocked the gun out of Jackie’s hands, and it fell on the floor. Brenda dropped down to the floor to reach for the gun, and Jackie kicked the gun. Then kicked Brenda in the side. Then, Jackie went to grab the gun off the floor, and Brenda grabbed the knife off the floor. Before Jackie could turn around and shoot Brenda, Brenda stabbed her in the back. Jackie and the gun fell. “Psycho,” Brenda said, as she grabbed the gun, and used her house phone, to call the cops. Then Brenda called Marcus. The cops arrived and arrested Jackie. While they were putting Jackie in the car, Marcus pulled up. He hugged and kissed Brenda, and asked her if she was okay. Brenda told Marcus what she had found out from Jackie. “I know the truth about why you paid that cop too,” she told him. “They were going to bring charges against me for aiding and abetting. Why didn’t you tell me?” Brenda said. “Because, I wanted to protect you. My past is my mess, and I don’t want you to pay the price for my sins. I really do love you, Brenda. I know it’s going to take a while for you to trust me again, but I am a changed man. I’d rather make an honest living with less money and my family, than to lose you and live on top of the world.
A year after that, Marcus had proven that he was truly, a changed man. His home security service was legit, and it had grown throughout various locations, in Georgia. Brenda was working on her degree to become a behavioral analyst. The kids were happy and healthy, and everything was looking up. Brenda and Marcus were married in the backyard of their mansion, and Eric and his new boo even came. Eric learned to appreciate and respect Marcus. Brenda’s mom learned to love Marcus, despite his past. He even began to attend Sunday services at her church. At the reception, Tonya caught the bouquet, and she also caught the eye of one of Marcus’s friends. The newlyweds danced their first dance, and then everyone danced and ate. During the main course, Tonya made a special toast to Brenda and Marcus. They cut their cakes, and fed a piece to each other. Then they took a sip of their champagne with their arms intertwined. Afterwards, they got back on the dance floor with family and friends, to dance the night away.
The End.
