Are you there Sunshine? It’s me… Lily. : A short story by Shubricca L Bell

Every morning, Sunshine woke Lily bright and early. Lily would rise out of her comfy flower bed, yawning and stretching. Sunshine would already be up working, and making preparations for the day. Sunshine was always working and early mornings never seemed to be a bother to Him. He was always so bright and full of life. “Sunshine?” Lilly said. “Yes, Lilly?” Sunshine responded, while multitasking, being both attentive to Lilly and making sure that the entire garden was cared for. “Thank you for always waking me up and making sure that not only I, but the entire garden has everything it needs. If it wasn’t for you, I’d sleep most my days away, but thanks to you, I have purpose. When you wake me each morning, it motivates me to grow. It motivates me to make the best of every opportunity and for that, I am grateful. Thank you for always being there for me. You will never leave me, right?” Sunshine smiled, and His rays beamed on Lily gently. “You’re welcome, Lily,” Sunshine said. “It gives me great pleasure to be here for you. I will never leave you, but I want to talk to you about something,” Sunshine said. “Yes,” Lily replied with all ears. “There will come a time when you won’t see me, but you must trust that I am with you. You won’t feel my rays gently beaming on you and you won’t hear my voice, but you must trust that I am there. Okay?” Lily said, “Okay, but will you give me a heads up before this happens?” Sunshine laughed, “Oh, Lily. I’m giving you a heads up now. It won’t happen today, but it will one day, and I want you to be prepared.” “Well, remind me right before it happens, Sunshine. You know, so I won’t freak out,” Lily said. Sunshine laughed again. “It doesn’t work like that, Lily. You must remember what I’m telling you today, and prepare yourself daily, so you’ll know what to do once this happens. You will still be able to talk to me, see me and feel my presence, just not the way you’re used to, but have faith. Just because I’m not physically with you doesn’t mean I’m not present. Okay?” “Okay,” Lily said. So months went by, and Lily had gotten back comfortable with Sunshine still being there physically to care for her, she’d even forgotten that he said one day she’d wake up and she wouldn’t see or hear from him. Then one day, he suddenly wasn’t glowing. The day felt gloomy. The garden was still there, but it didn’t look or feel the same as it did when Sunshine’s rays were present. Then Lily remembered what Sunshine had told her. Even though she felt alone and didn’t know how she was going to go on, she rose and did everything Sunshine taught her to do. Things didn’t feel the same though. She cried because she longed for Sunshine’s presence, but even in the midst of this, she kept doing what Sunshine had taught her. “Are you there Sunshine? It’s me, Lily,” she said without making a sound. “I’m here,” Sunshine said. Immediately, a joy came over Lily. “I feel your rays gently beaming on me,” Lily said, again without speaking a word. Sunshine’s comfort gave Lily a peace that even she didn’t understand, and a joy that even a gloomy day couldn’t take away. Suddenly, the garden began to thrive and things began to look like they did when everyone could see Sunshine. This was all evidence that Sunshine was there, and even though Lily couldn’t see him, she believed him. That night, Lily heard Sunshine’s voice in her heart. He told her that he was well pleased with her faith. Lily learned an important lesson that day, “Faith doesn’t make things easy, it makes them possible.” “All things are possible for one who believes.” -Jesus (Mark 9:23)

In life, there will be times when you can’t hear God like you used to. Things may not look like they used to and you may not even feel His presence, but remember what He has taught you and continue on. He’s always with you. Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
